How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked... For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor.
Psalm 84

Laying Up Treasures in Heaven

Posted on by JEC

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when we hear the word TREASURE?  Gold.. Jewels.. Money.. Treasure Chests.. Magic Carpet.. Castle… Okay, before I carry you all away, there as well are Family, Friends, Loved ones, even random things that have sentimental value to us.  Yes indeed! Those are all real treasures here on Earth.

We often hear that we should store up heavenly treasures.  Ever wonder what those are?  If earthly treasures consist of wealth, family, tangible things of pleasure and happiness, well I believe that heavenly treasures will exceed more than that hundredfold!  There would be crowns waiting for believers up there.  Permanent peace would envelop everyone, something that’s only momentarily here on Earth.  Whether tangible or intangible treasures, the heart of the matter lies on being with God with His majestic plans and that all the good things/ values we have on Earth will be carried on towards heaven forever.

So how do we store up treasures?  Because we’re still here on Earth, we have to make the best out of our daily lives.  In layman’s term, PURSUE IT.  Here are few guidelines to help us:

1. Accept Christ as our personal Lord and Savior

What are the heavenly treasures for without us being there?  This initial do-or-die step sums up our only way to Heaven.  Jesus is the only way and without Him, no amount of good works may permit us to enter His kingdom.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2: 8-9

2. Pray and Meditate on His Word

Jesus has always something in store for us every minute of the day.  The bible serves as our compass towards His will.  We can know more about heavenly treasures if we become more and more like Jesus.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. – Matthew 7:7

3. Be careful where you place your hearts in

Jesus knew that we cannot serve Him purely if we are distracted with idols (possessions, relationships, valuables etc).  God wants us to treasure Him first.  Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.  By then, we can serve Him purely and be rewarded up there.

34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:34

4. Love your neighbor as yourself

This can be expressed in a heap of ways! We can give alms to the poor, offer our acts of service, help the needy, humbly thinking of their sake as of our own.  When done cheerfully, this proves our heart of gratitude towards God that we want to follow His commands.

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” – Mark 10: 21

There are numerous ways in storing up treasures in heaven.  These lie from what’s truly in our hearts.   Bottomline, our efforts will be rewarded as God promises, only if we choose to follow Him whole-heartedly.  The world will always go round.  Sometimes we’re up, sometimes we’re down.  But with Jesus, we’re always sure to rise up.  Will you start now to pursue your heavenly treasures?
