How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked... For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor.
Psalm 84

Testimony on God & Sports

My name is Kirk Long. I have lived here in the Philippines since 1991. Growing up here has given me experiences and opportunities in life that I never could have dreamed of. I have played for the Philippine national baseball team, represented my high-school in tournaments all over South East Asia, and won championships for my University in the UAAP, PCCL, and Fil-oil summer league. I have realized however, all of these accomplishments mean nothing at all if they are not used for God’s glory.

I love playing sports, but the people that took the time to teach me to play these sports also took the time to share with me that life is not about a game of basketball or baseball but there is much more to it. I have been grateful for what these sports have given me, but I realize that trophies and records don’t last forever; they will perish like so many other things in this world.

My life verse is Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” This is my goal in life no matter if I am at school, home with my family, or out on the court. I know the only reason a silly game can be important and meaningful is if I use it to honor God. He could make my last day of basketball be today if He wanted to, it’s completely in His hands and that is the way I like it.

In Philippians 4:13 it says “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength”. It took me a while but when I realized that God was the reason for my success on the court I really started enjoying myself more and had a lot to be thankful for. This is now my goal in life to share with kids in the same way my father and tito’s shared with me that they have a mighty God on their side and that He wants to be a part of everything they do.

I love the story of the Scottish Olympic runner Eric Liddle, who has a famous quote of saying “God has made me to be a missionary, aye, but he has made me fast, and when I run, I feel God’s pleasure”. I have not always looked at basketball this way, but it is so much more enjoyable when I do. I am excited for opportunities in my life to not only see and help kids play sports they enjoy but to help them experience and share the love of Jesus Christ through the sports that they play.”
